Ethnic Muslim and Turkic groups located in far western China are the current targets of a brutal crackdown. Among the atrocities being committed against them are mass imprisonments, forced sterilizations, the removal of children, forced labor, sexual violence, and of course murder. In his book The War on the Uyghurs, Sean Roberts argues that China used the Global War on Terrorism, implemented by the United States after the September 11 attacks, to repress these groups and declare them an enemy of the state.
