If Muir was the consummate environmentalist of the early twentieth century, Brower fills that position in that century’s latter half. Both were associated with the Sierra Club, Muir as a founder and board member and Brower as the first executive director. After removal from his Sierra Club post, Brower founded Friends of the Earth. His son Kenneth Brower eulogizes him in The Wildness Within: Remembering David Brower. He also plays the main role in John McPhee’s classic book Encounters with the Archdruid, a tale of philosophical differences similar to those between Muir and Pinchot.
