As this essay and the accompanying bibliography illustrates, American environmental history is a very active discipline. This overview has sampled books published primarily in the last decade and a half. Neither Mexico nor Canada is covered directly, although there are active scholars studying the environmental history of those countries. Many of the books discussed have been reviewed in Choice and in Environmental History. The study of environmental history is relevant to students in a range of fields, and a strong collection of resources in this area will be valuable for all academic libraries.
