Tracing the History of the Bicycle and Its Impact on Society (November 2016): Conclusion

By Duncan R. Jamieson

Conclusion

Though often viewed as a children’s toy rather than a vehicle offering myriad opportunities, the bicycle has been an integral part of American society for the last 150 years. Largely ignored by serious scholars until recently, the bicycle is the topic of a wealth of information, both primary and secondary, for students in many disciplines. This bibliography provides an introduction; the bibliographies in many of the citations will extend the reader’s opportunities. One last citation is an internet bibliography, “Bicycle Travel and Touring” (http://personal.ashland.edu/DJAMIESO/), including fiction and nonfiction books and articles from the 1870s to the present.
