As in our American filmmakers article, we present the monographs by the theoretical approach the critic takes. Titles discussed within each theoretical section are listed at the end of the essay, in a Works Cited bibliography. The prior article explores the basic idea behind each theory in greater depth than does this one. For world filmmakers, by far the two most common approaches are the auteur and the formalist.
