While the literal meaning of misinformation (i.e., false information) may be apparent, it is essential to acknowledge the diverse types of false information. Misinformation includes both inaccurate information unknowingly created or disseminated as well as deliberately fabricated information. Deliberately fabricated information may be intended for satirical impact or intentional deception, the latter of which is referred to as disinformation. This essay focuses on the broadest category of false information—misinformation—aligning with the majority of the manuscript literature, which demonstrates the complexity of the political information ecosystem.
