Educators who elect to craft their own projects, lessons, and units often use some of the texts highlighted in the previous section. They may individualize and invigorate these endeavors by adding children’s literature that is appropriate for the topic and the developmental level of the students with whom they work. The books discussed in the following sections have been separated into groups for children enrolled respectively in grades pre-K–2, 3–5, 6–8, and 9–12. If a text seems appropriate to use with another age group, however, educators should feel free to use their professional judgement and draw upon books that will work best for their students. When possible, vocabulary, themes, concepts, and procedures from these lessons and materials should be addressed in other areas of study as well, as this helps children build concepts, vocabulary, and understandings.
