From Sea to Shining Sea: Key Resources in U.S. Environmental History (March 2015): Fire

by Larry T. Spencer

Fire

Fires are now acknowledged as a natural and important phenomenon in the American ecosystem. Any treatment of fire in the United States is based upon Steven Pyne’s Fire in America: A Cultural History of Wildland and Rural Fire. Many fires occur in national forests, and Philip Smith, in his Fire in the Forest: Forest Service Fire Fighters, discusses the role that the U.S. Forest Service plays in fighting forest fires.
